📘Tips for Writing Treatment Plan Goals and Objectives
Here are some of my best tips for writing measurable, time-bound goals and objectives for various treatment issues.
When crafting smart, tailored goals and objectives, there are a few guiding principles to keep in mind:
- Goals should be client-centered – they are related to what the client wants.
- Goals should describe a future state of being – consider the kind of experience, emotional state, or state of mind does your client want to achieve and maintain.
- Goals and objectives should be created collaboratively, ensuring buy-in from your client.
- Goals and objectives should be based on a solid assessment of your client’s symptoms, beliefs, behaviors, interactional patterns, and history.
Treatment Plan as a Road Map
💡PRO TIP: Think of your treatment plan as a map, where the goal is the specific destination your client wants to get to, and the goal’s corresponding objectives are the step-by-step directions for exactly how to get there.

Writing Goals & Objectives
When writing treatment plan goals and objectives, you might consider things like:
- Increasing emotional expression
- Reduction of problematic symptoms
- Improvement in functioning
- Raising self-awareness
- Reframing and challenging internalized beliefs
- Recognizing and reshaping patterns
- Building coping strategies
- Increasing somatic and emotional awareness
- Adding experiential elements like role-playing and homework assignments
- Incorporating creative expression & writing exercises (like these art therapy activities)
- Using technology, tools, and accessible resources
Making Measurable Goals & Objectives
There are a number of ways to make goals and objectives specific and measurable. Here are a couple things to consider:
- Measure by Completion of objectives (eg: “…as evidenced by the completion of the objectives below.“)
- Measure by Client-designed rating scale (eg: “…as rated by self-report on a 1-5 scale where 5 is significantly improved“)
- Completion of activities during a specific timeframe (eg: “…over the course of the next 3 months“)
- Specific task completion in or out of session (eg: “…create a career vision board to refer to in sessions“)
